Zone 2 Update | 20 June 2011

Yesterday. High winds from the southwest restricted air support operations after 11:00 am. Structure protection remained in place to protect the towns of Luna and Alpine, as well as the Blue River community. Additional resources were brought in to assist with the containment efforts, and replace crews that timed out. Fire did burn NE of Luna about 5 miles into the Bishop Canyon area. Fire in the Blue River backed down close to the road by the Blue camp ground, and by Mile Markers 26 and 31.

Today. Winds will not be as strong, allowing air operations to support the firefighting effort. Temperatures will be lower allowing firefighters to make progress on problem areas. The fire is expected to back down toward the Blue River. Winds will be out of the northwest which will help firefighting efforts at Luna and aid with the protection of the power lines. The fire environment is much more favorable today but long range spotting remains a possibility.

More Information: The Fire Information Office for Zone 2 is located at the Catron County Fairgrounds in Reserve, New Mexico.  For more information about Zone 2 of the Wallow Fire, please call 575-533-6928.

Closures: There is an area closure on the western portions of Quemado, Reserve and Glenwood Ranger Districts.  The closure is necessary to protect the public and provide for firefighter safety while working to contain the Wallow Fire.

Air Quality Update for Springerville

Even with the high winds that we experienced over the weekend the air quality was still considered good and moderate for the majority of the time.  This has been a big concern for us with our children.  The Springerville Particulate concentration monitor can be viewed online at ADEQ’s Website.  Below is a snapshot of the weekend’s air quality.

TalWiWi Status Update

Wesley,

Posting an update is fine.  We are going to try to open the Tal-wi-wi Saloon today around 1:00 (Tuesday).  We probably will not be open late, as Bea is very tired, and we have not contacted our backup bartenders yet.  We figured they need time to get adjusted.  We are looking at Thursday to open the lodge rooms.  I have not been able to contact the Rusty cactus restaurant yet, so I have no update on that yet.  The temporary Verizon towers seemed to have missed much of Tal-wi-wi, so we have no cell service at the lodge, although I heard soom cabins can get their cell phones to work.

Ted.
